Drummers "Down time" - Part 1

Whether you are a working drummer or weekend warrior there always seems to be an excuse to take "Down time" from drumming. As a passionate musician, I think about music every day, but yes there are days I am not actively 'playing' the drums.

Currently on a family road trip I am exploring different ways to maximize down time and did a little planning before the trip such as bring my favorite drum pad, sticks and of course my always-handy metronome app on my phone.

I also decided to jump into the world of on-line lessons (taking not giving) and (stating the obvious here...) quickly realized that focused rudiment practice can be fun AND challenging. The point being - you have nothing else but a pad, no kit, no distractions, no chores around the house - wow what freedom and focus I have waking up before everyone else and diving into basic hand speed lessons and tracking time and clarity every day. Check out Mike Johnston's catalog of lessons and while Mike's focus is on the beginning/intermediate drummer, there truly is something for everyone. Mike is funny, honest, sarcastic and investing in himself and others at a deep personal level. His "Family" is growing by the day and he is a great drummer who clearly works at his craft. You can tell he loves what he does and is capable of much more, pushing himself every day and is comfortable showing his own limitations on video.

So next time you are on the road, away with family or generally have some "down time" - wake up early, get out the pad, and do your own "Throwback Thursday" and focus on your rudiments and maybe even take an online lesson or two.
