Is there a perfect snare drum?
Quick answer - no, I don't think the perfect snare drum really exists, but I always look for snares that can serve multiple purposes. Therefore I have a lot of snares and a very supportive and loving wife!
Today I'm really digging this Ludwig Hammered Bronze Supraphonic snare --Keystone Badge, Monroe NC Serial Number: 3348087. This is an atypical bronze that can get loud when it needs to be also can be played at low volumes with sensitivity using brushes or blastics.
I love a snare that sounds great at any level of play!
An early 90's era snare, this bronze Supra delivers a warm, almost 'wood-like' resonance with a focused, metallic attack.
The rims have been upgraded to 2.3MM Power Hoops from Mapex, and together with the hammered shell delivers a slightly drier sound with reduced overtones for increased clarity and sensitivity.
This snare has the classic Imperial Lugs with upgraded Hendrix Sleeved Washers to ensure no metal on metal at each lug. The 402 Seamless beaded bronze shell delivers that punch and a great rimshot crack for incredible backbeat sounds in the studio. A very rare drum with a killer sound.
Some road rash on the shell as to be expected for a drum 20 years old but does not impact the sound or the play-ability.
Customizations include a Remo Controlled Sound Reverse Dot Coated batter head, Fat Cat snare wire and the aforementioned Hendrix Sleeved Washers.
This beauty is studio and road ready to rock! An Incredible recording snare.
